One of the criteria for university admission is a motivation letter. According to the Law “On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine on Improving Educational Activities in the Field of Higher Education,” one of its innovations is that applicants must write a motivation letter.

A motivation letter is your chance to present yourself as a motivated, bright, and highly capable individual who is ready to apply to university. Make your letter a vivid personal description of your unique self to show who you are and why you want to be accepted.

What is a cover letter and why is it needed?

A letter of motivation is a document prepared and submitted by an applicant to a higher education institution, which explains the reasons why the applicant considers himself or herself to be the best candidate for admission to the relevant study program. Preparation of such a letter requires a detailed study by the applicant of the general academic environment of the university and various educational programs.

Such a letter has a double value. On the one hand, it slightly increases the competitive score, and this can be an important argument for admission. With the same NMT score, educational institutions will be able to give preference to the most motivated applicants. On the other hand, by writing a motivation letter, an applicant gets an additional opportunity to think about and justify his or her decision, to be firmly convinced of his or her conviction to enter the relevant educational program or to change his or her mind.

How to write a good motivation letter for university admission?

The Motivation-letter.com website offers five tips for writing a good motivation letter:

1. Know yourself. To write a good motivation letter, you need to think about and understand for yourself why you are interested in this particular institution or educational program. Write down at least five unique traits, abilities, or attributes that make you stand out from the crowd. Choose only those that you are going to use in your letter to prove to the admissions committee that you are a valuable candidate.

2. Research the subject. Choose the university and specialty you are applying for. Research them as deeply as possible. Find out details such as the mission, vision, and motto of the university (faculty) or even the learning outcomes you must achieve to obtain your degree. You will have come a long way by the time you start composing your cover letter. The more specific and detail-oriented you are in your letter, the better. Also, look for examples of motivation letters on the Internet.

3. Make a first draft. This is an important part of the process of writing your letter. In some cases, it takes about 3-4 drafts to write a cover letter. In each draft, you should start by writing down the main ideas and working on individual sections.

4. Reread the letter and make sure you have answered all the important questions. Who are you and why are you applying? How did you find out about the university/faculty/major? Why do you want to study at the university/faculty/major? What makes you the best candidate to be accepted? Summarize what qualifications, life experience, work experience and personal qualities have prepared you for university studies.

5. Finalize your letter. Make sure that your letter fits on one page, is in the correct font, and that you have checked spelling and grammar. Have several people read it for review and comment.
